This year marks the 231st anniversary of the Bill of Rights. Ratified on Dec. 15, 1791, it added to the Constitution specific protection for many of the rights and freedoms we hold dear. Primary among these rights is religious freedom, the first freedom listed in the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

Canceling Everything We Hold Dear

Throughout 2022, freedom faced attacks almost daily from many opponents on the Left who attempted to “cancel” everything we hold dear about our country. These opponents are trying to tear down our very constitutional republic and unique American identity. Instead of commemorating America’s founding ideals and its documents, the Left and its allies malign them.

The attacks on freedom are prevalent and ever-growing.

One example of this kind of threat is Cancel Culture. Waves of cancelations have plagued the United States as angry online mobs villainize pivotal historical figures from Thomas Jefferson to George Washington to Abraham Lincoln. In the name of “tolerance,” these Leftists mete out swift and destructive force upon some of the most prominent people who shaped American history. “Woke” cancel culture is really a dangerous form of soft totalitarianism, erasing the cultural memory of the champions of foundational American ideas.

Revisionist history has also tampered with an entire generation’s view of our country. Changing and manipulating events of the past, radical ideologies have rewritten history to fit a particular political narrative. These efforts are quickly unraveling our constitutional fabric.

Let’s Celebrate the Founders’ Foresight

But today we celebrate the Bill of Rights, because it upholds our God-given rights. Now more than ever, it is important to promulgate the importance of our Founding Documents. We commemorate the Bill of Rights on December 15th because it reminds Americans of their true DNA and a framework to reunite a nation.

The Bill of Rights represents a historic breakthrough in freedom and the relationship between the state and the individual. Freedom of religion, speech and assembly, the right to bear arms, and the right to trial by jury are among the rights that make America an exceptional nation.

We proudly celebrate the Bill of Rights as a pivotal part of our history. From the very infancy of our nation, these sacred, God-given rights were protected. We enjoy these freedoms today because our Founding Fathers had the foresight to enshrine them in our Constitution in order to protect us against tyrannical government. They have served as a bulwark of protection of individual rights and freedom for over two centuries.

Religious liberty is the cornerstone on which all of our other freedoms rest. First Liberty is exclusively dedicated to protecting that First Freedom for all Americans.
