A federal appeals court recently issued a ruling in our Faith Under Fire case involving Fire Chief Ron Hittle. He’s the former firefighter from Stockton, California who was wrongfully fired from his job for attending a leadership conference hosted at a church. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit sided with the city in firing Chief Hittle.
This is a disappointing opinion, but the fight is not over. We plan to appeal this decision, including taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. Our attorneys will keep fighting to make sure Americans like Chief Hittle are not forced to choose between their faith and their livelihood.
“It is a tragic day for religious liberty in America when someone can be fired merely because they attend an event hosted within a religious institution’s building,” said David Hacker, First Liberty Vice President of Litigation. “The city broke the law when it fired Chief Hittle due to clear religious bias. We plan on seeking further review of today’s decision to uphold the meaning of Title VII for all Americans in the workplace.”
