Please join us in congratulating Keisha Russell, who served as First Liberty Senior Counsel, on her appointment by Gov. Ron DeSantis as the Executive Director of the Florida Commission on Human Relations.
The Commission enforces the Florida Civil Rights Act and addresses “discrimination issues through education, outreach and partnerships.” It was established to investigate and resolve discrimination complaints in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, and the Whistleblower’s Act.
“Keisha’s wealth of experience and innovative ideas will be an incredible asset to the State of Florida,” said Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO and Chief Counsel for First Liberty. “Keisha is an excellent attorney and has been a valued part of our legal team. We will miss her, but are excited about her new opportunity to help Floridians.”
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Keisha served as a leader in higher education and as a special education teacher in Atlanta. After witnessing the injustice and disparities in our nation’s schools, she felt led to attend law school.
During her time as a First Liberty attorney, Keisha was at the forefront of the battle as the head of our education practice group. She has defended religious freedom for students and teachers for almost a decade, like our client Marisol Castro.
She has also clerked for the Honorable James C. Ho at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. She has briefed cases at all levels of the federal court, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Because of her expertise and legal acumen, Keisha has testified before the President’s Religious Liberty Commission and the U.S. Senate, as well as at numerous conferences and events nationwide.
“I am incredibly thrilled to join the team at the Florida Commission on Human Rights in their fight to defend the civil rights of Floridians,” Keisha said. “I cannot adequately convey how honored I am for this opportunity. I am extremely grateful for my time at First Liberty and will use everything I’ve learned in my role as Executive Director.”
Keisha is the author of Uncommon Courage: Defending Truth and Freedom While There is Still Time. Her religious liberty commentary has been published in Fox News, Washington Examiner, The Daily Signal, Real Clear Religion, The Richmond Times-Dispatch, WORLD Magazine, and others. She’s been a guest on Fox News, CBN, and other national stations.
Thank you, Keisha, for blessing First Liberty with your wisdom and your fighting spirit! More than just a work colleague, we consider you a dear friend. We pray God will use your talents and experience for His Glory and for the protection of our country.
