A Bakery Lost, a Family Forever Changed
For Aaron and Melissa Klein, opening Sweet Cakes by Melissa in Oregon was a dream come true. Built on hard work, creativity, and their Christian faith, the family bakery became a beloved part of their lives and a legacy they hoped to pass on to their children.
That dream was shattered in 2013 when the Kleins declined to create a custom wedding cake celebrating a same-sex wedding because doing so would have violated their religious beliefs. Oregon officials imposed a crushing $135,000 penalty, and a public backlash followed.
The financial burden, combined with boycotts, media attacks, threats, and harassment directed at the Klein family, ultimately forced them to close their bakery. Melissa describes losing Sweet Cakes as losing a part of herself. What had been their second home—and their family’s future—was gone.
Years later, the pain remains, as the Kleins continue to reflect on the business they loved and fight for the right to run their business according to their faith.
People across our nation are facing growing pressure because of their faith.
We’re on the front lines defending their rights — and keeping Americans like you informed about what’s happening.
