IN THE SCHOOL
Last week, Liberty Institute rushed to the defense of Conway Public Schools in evaluating its policies concerning visitors to its campuses during lunchtime after the district received a threatening demand letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) objecting to visits by youth ministers.
“The district respects the religious liberty of all students and citizens and will work diligently to follow the Constitution and take the appropriate steps necessary to investigate this issue further and follow the law,” said Conway Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Greg Murry.
Liberty Institute will conduct an investigation of the issues regarding equal access for visitors to the school and make a report and recommendation to the district on or before the school board’s next meeting on February 12, 2013.
Fortunately, this school district reached out to Liberty Institute before it immediately gave into the demands of FFRF without any investigation or evaluation of the law applicable to its policies, but sadly, this is not always the case. Many times, schools immediately capitulate to the demands…mostly to avoid costly lawsuits.
