The Supreme Court is under attack. We’re seeing a steady stream of headlines every day that target the Court in order to undermine its credibility.
Chief Justice John Roberts is now the target of a smear campaign. The New York Times criticized Roberts in a recent article for writing the majority opinion in three cases involving President Donald Trump and the January 6 storming of the Capitol, as well as cases about the 2020 election and the recent ruling on presidential immunity. The main claim is that he “molded” the Court’s rulings.
The Times piece cites “several court insiders” and “scholars” who said Roberts was “breaking from court procedure.” Apparently, Roberts had assigned Justice Alito to write the majority opinion in Fischer v. United States, a case about January 6. But Roberts decided to change authors and took over writing the opinion. The Times portrays this as a “mysterious reassignment” and “behind the scenes footwork by the justices” supposedly done to favor President Trump.
How did the Times obtain this information? It was leaked from the inside. The news outlet says its account is based on “the justices’ private memos, documentation of the proceedings and interviews with court insiders, both conservative and liberal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.”
A Daily Mail article doubled down on these attacks against the Chief Justice, accusing him of “meddling” in these high profile and controversial cases.
“Roberts strong-armed his fellow Supreme Court judges into allowing him the key role in cases involving Donald Trump,” writes the Daily Mail. “The latest leaks suggest he has attempted to reassert his authority with a vengeance.”
Chief Justice Roberts, of course, isn’t the only member of the Court who’s been singled out and attacked. The far Left has kept up a steady stream of accusations and a smear campaign against Justice Clarence Thomas. They insist he’s engaged in “unethical” behavior, which is their argument to justify imposing a “code of ethics” on the Court that Congress would oversee and enforce.
All of this makes one thing very clear: the most extreme groups in the country are going to keep going after the Supreme Court and the justices they see as obstacles. They won’t stop until they wrest control of the Court. All of the talk behind today’s “reform” scheme really comes down to destroying judicial independence.
