Paige Rogers

Barista Gets Roasted for Sharing Her Beliefs

When Paige Rogers was asked about her Christian beliefs by coworkers, she answered honestly. Days later, she was fired. Now, First Liberty is taking action to defend Paige’s religious freedom. Will you join us and help defend the freedom to live and speak your faith without fear of losing your livelihood?

She Was Asked a Question.
She Told the Truth.

Paige Rogers is a student at Boyce College in Louisville, Kentucky. Like many college students, she worked part-time to help pay for school. She loved serving customers at Heine Brothers Coffee and simply wanted to do her job well.

One day during her shift, two coworkers began asking Paige about her views on marriage, sexuality and other personal topics. They wanted to know what she believed after learning she attended a Christian college.

Paige didn’t initiate the conversation or force her beliefs on anyone. She respectfully answered the questions she was asked, acknowledging that while her Christian faith shapes her life, she understood others may believe differently.

The conversation ended.

Or so Paige thought.

Fired by Text for Her Faith

Nearly two weeks later, Paige received a text message that changed everything. Without any warning, discussion or opportunity to explain herself, Heine Brothers Coffee terminated her employment.

The company claimed that Paige’s religious beliefs were “unwelcome” and “offensive”—despite the fact that she had only answered questions her coworkers initiated.

No performance issues. No misconduct.

Just a young woman who answered honestly when someone asked about her faith.

And if this can happen to Paige, it can happen to anyone.

Alaska Quote Marks

“The idea that an employer can fire an employee for simply voicing a religious belief, after being invited to do so, is chilling. No employee should have to hide their faith in order to keep their job.”

First Liberty Is Fighting Back

First Liberty Institute has filed a charge of religious discrimination with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Paige’s behalf.

We’re seeking justice by asking that:

  • She be compensated for the income she lost.
  • Heine Brothers Coffee be held accountable for violating federal law.
  • Religious employees everywhere know their constitutional and legal rights will be defended.

This case isn’t just about Paige.

It’s about protecting the freedom of every American to speak honestly about their faith without fearing they’ll lose their livelihood.
