A coalition of progressive groups says it will spend $10 million to convince Americans that the Senate needs to “reform” the Supreme Court and end the filibuster.
Over the last several years, some politicians, candidates and activist groups have tossed around the idea of “reforming” the Senate filibuster. But it’s clear what the real intent is: bulldoze a key Senate procedure, so they can quickly push through a radical agenda without having to compromise with the minority party. In other words, it’s another brazen attempt to grab more political power.
As The Wall Street Journal editorial board reports, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona “favors overriding the Senate filibuster to pass national abortion protections.” Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, the leading candidate to take on Sen. Rick Scott of Florida this fall, also said she would support pushing aside the Senate filibuster.
As it relates to religious freedom, Americans should remember that the filibuster is an essential part of our legislative process—a necessary guardrail that protects our God-given rights from being taken away at a moment’s notice.
The Founders designed the Senate to be more deliberative and to move more slowly than the House of Representatives. The filibuster rule used to lead to extended sessions of speech-making, prolonging debate in an effort to delay or stop a bill from moving forward. In more recent times, the Senate decided to keep the process moving by requiring a 60-vote majority to end debate and bring a bill to a final up-or-down-vote.
But some politicians want to change that threshold to a simple majority.
“The result would be a winner-take-all politics, since a Senate that can protect abortion with 51 votes can ban it with 51 votes, and ditto on guns, unions and anything else,” warns The Wall Street Journal.
If the filibuster is “reformed” or removed, it would destroy the Founders’ vision for the Senate and open the floodgates to far-reaching legislation, policies and even radical changes to the Constitution. Destructive measures would likely pass very quickly—including court-packing, which would destroy judicial independence and the rule of law in America.
Coalition Aims to Change the Rules
The radical Left desperately wants to turn the Supreme Court into a rubber-stamp for its political agenda. And they’re pouring in millions of dollars to make it happen.
United for Democracy, a coalition of some of the most extreme groups in the country, is gearing up to launch a $10 million campaign to “expose the MAGA Supreme Court.” The coalition will spend $1 million on ads in Arizona and Pennsylvania, as well as in the Washington, D.C., area, and the campaign will also involve canvassing and events, officials tell Rolling Stone.
The United for Democracy coalition launched last year with a seven-figure ad buy. It has over 100 member organizations, including major labor unions, pro-abortion advocates, environmental groups and liberal think tanks.
United for Democracy says this latest campaign is about “talking to Americans across the country about the issues they care about, and how the Supreme Court is connected to either rolling back the progress or standing in the way of us being able to make progress on those issues.”
This isn’t the first “progressive coalition” to launch a campaign to attack the nation’s highest court. In February, Stand Up America launched a six-figure campaign calling for Supreme Court term limits. This would effectively purge three of the Court’s conservatives: Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito.
Don’t be fooled. These ad campaigns aren’t about “saving democracy” or “protecting our rights.” This is all about some politicians—along with many of the country’s most radical groups—trying to get around decisions they don’t like. All of their proposals and attacks boil down to the Left trying everything possible to take control of the Supreme Court, even if it means destroying some essential pillars in our system of government. This is all about grabbing more power.
If their politically motivated Supreme Court Coup succeeds, the judiciary will become little more than a tool of whomever holds power. Judges will lose their ability to enforce the rule of law with impartiality, and the last safeguard to our civil liberties—including religious freedom—will be gone.
