U.S. Supreme Court Should Side with Parents in Battle Over Gender Ideology Teaching, Religious Liberty Expert Says

Washington, DC—The Supreme Court of the United States heard oral argument today in Mahmoud v. Taylor, a case where Maryland parents have asked the Court to restore their right to opt their children out of gender ideology lessons.  The following statement may be attributed to Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel to First Liberty Institute:

Our children are not children of the state. They are children of their parents. And parents have the right to know what their children are being taught in school, especially when that material goes against their sincerely held religious beliefs. The government should not be able to hide what its teaching in schools simply because it doesn’t like the values of the parents.  The U.S. Supreme Court has a chance to stand on the side of parents by ensuring that parents have a say when it comes to the education of their children.

First Liberty Institute and The National Center for Law & Policy filed a lawsuit on behalf of two California families in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California urging the court to require Encinitas Union School District to provide notification and opt-outs to parents and students when promoting gender ideology.  The case is pending.
