First Liberty Institute Urges Texas County to Follow AG Paxton’s Guidance, Allow Client to Open School
Brownsville, TX – First Liberty Institute sent a letter to Cameron County, Texas officials informing that its client, Laguna Madre Christian Academy, will follow Attorney General Ken Paxton’s guidance regarding religious schools and reopen on August 31st. Local officials have told school officials that they are not allowed to reopen, despite the AG Paxton’s guidance on the issue.
First Liberty’s letter is available here.
Jeremy Dys, Special Counsel for Litigation and Communications at First Liberty said, “Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been unequivocal: local governments have no authority under Texas law to shut down or delay private religious schools from reopening. Cameron County officials, refusing to respect the religious liberty and the autonomy of religious institutions, dismiss the Attorney General’s opinion as illegitimate at their own peril. We view any effort by Cameron County to enforce its unlawful order as an affront to religious liberty and will meet it with the strictest legal defense.”
The school plans to implement multiple health and safety guidelines to keep its students and staff safe.
