Statement Regarding U.S. Department of Education Action to Protect Religious Liberty on College Campuses
Washington, DC—Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced a new regulation protecting the First Amendment rights of students at colleges and universities, including ensuring that religious student groups be given equal treatment on public campuses. The following statement may be attributed to Stephanie Taub, Senior Counsel at First Liberty Institute:
“Many private colleges promise that they will protect free speech. The Department of Education’s announcement today is an important step toward ensuring that they live up to that promise. The new rule also protects students’ religious freedom by requiring public colleges to treat all student groups equally and barring discrimination against religious groups.”
