Adeel Mangi—President Biden’s nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit—continues to draw significant opposition. Five police unions representing nearly 280,000 officers recently sent letters urging senators to oppose Mangi’s nomination.
“We find it crucial to draw attention to Mr. Mangi’s role as a Board Member of the Alliance of Families for Justice, an organization which advocates for the release of individuals convicted of killing law enforcement officers,” wrote the National Sheriff’s Association. “The fact that Mr. Mangi, as an Advisory Board member, aligns himself with an organization advocating for the release of convicted cop-killers is seriously disturbing” and “raises concerns about a potential bias against victims and law enforcement.”
The National Association of Police Organizations, which represents 241,000 police officers, said Mangi “made his choice” to associate with a group that exalts “unrepentant killers who were convicted following legal trials in courts of law.” According to them, this “shows an anti-victim and anti-police bias that would certainly cloud his decision-making as a judge.”
The Rockland County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association echoed those concerns. They said his affiliation to this radical group “shows his lack of care for life and the rule of law.”
This isn’t Mr. Mangi’s only concerning affiliation. First Liberty also warned about him serving on the advisory board of the Rutgers Center for Security, Race and Rights—an organization that promotes anti-Semitism and praises terrorist groups.
Mr. Mangi recently issued an apology to senators for failing to disclose his participation at a conference with anti-Israel activists. In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, he wrote that he “inadvertently omitted one responsive item” from his questionnaire in November 2023. Washington Examiner reports:
“In 2022, Mangi moderated a panel at the annual conference for the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, the Washington Examiner reported last week. His law firm, Patterson Belknap, helped sponsor the event, along with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which federal prosecutors named as an ‘unindicted co-conspirator’ of Hamas in a 2009 terrorism financing case.”
There’s been concern on both sides of the aisle about Mangi’s record. Several Republican Congressmen urged President Biden to withdraw his nomination. The Washington Examiner also explained that “Mangi’s nomination barely survived a party-line vote…in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where several Democrats were said to be worried about his fitness for the job.”
