This Labor Day weekend, we’re celebrating one year since Coach Joe Kennedy went back to the field and took a knee in prayer, quietly putting an exclamation point on his years’ long legal battle.
People all across the country showed tremendous support last September by taking part in the First Freedom Challenge. Countless Americans celebrated Coach Kennedy’s return to the football field by kneeling in prayer at their local stadiums and communities.
Now, we’re looking forward to the release of “Average Joe,” a movie dramatizing Coach Kennedy’s life story, which will be in theaters on Thursday, October 10th.
You can show your support for Coach Joe by going to the movies on opening week. Tickets are available for purchase. Get your yours now!
We caught up with Coach Kennedy this week on First Liberty Live! to talk about the movie. You’ll also get a first look at the official trailer. Watch below:
The movie recounts Coach Joe’s story, beginning with his childhood in foster care followed by 20 years in the Marine Corps. The film focuses on his biggest battle: his commitment to stand for God publicly by taking a knee in prayer after each game. When he was fired for living out his faith, Joe and his wife Denise soon knew this battle for religious freedom and the rights of all Americans was one they would have to fight.
After years of fighting in court, First Liberty secured a historic victory for Coach Kennedy at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022. That landmark ruling set a precedent that completely changed the landscape of religious freedom law in our country. Thanks to Coach Kennedy’s courage and perseverance throughout his case, Americans now have more religious freedom than they’ve had in 50 years.
