Parents Deserve Education Choice, Not Bigotry, Oklahoma Education Superintendent Says As Supreme Court Hears Charter School Case
Supreme Court hears oral argument in key religious liberty case.

Washington, DC—Today, the Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral argument in St. Isidore v. Drummond, a case involving the constitutionality of the Oklahoma Charter School Board’s approval of St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School for inclusion as a charter-school.  First Liberty Institute represents Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, the State Board of Education, and the State Department of Education.

“Excluding religious schools from our charter school program in the name of 19th century religious bigotry is wrong,” said Superintendent Walters.  “As state superintendent, I have an obligation to all our students and to the Constitution.  I hope the Supreme Court will stand with parents and families in opposition to religious discrimination.”

“Our victory in Carson v Makin made it clear that engaging in religious bigotry against a faith-based educational option is unconstitutional,” added Hiram Sasser, Executive General Counsel for First Liberty Institute.  “The First Amendment aligns with both St. Isidore’s freedom to operate according to its beliefs and the charter school board’s decision to include it as an option for students in Oklahoma.  We are confident the Justices will agree.”
