Is Free Speech Truly Free For People of Faith?

First Liberty | Defend Free Speech | Support the Kleins

You may think this is too hard to believe…but free speech is under heavy attack in America. Even more alarming is that our very own government is leading this attack against people of faith.

You’ve probably heard about the Masterpiece Cakeshop case.

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of cake artist and owner, Jack Philips, reminding the state that government officials cannot be hostile to the free exercise of the religious beliefs of its citizens.

While this was indeed a victory…it was a narrow one from a very important legal standpoint.

The real critical and missing piece that the Supreme Court failed to answer and MUST now answer in the Aaron and Melissa Klein case is this: can the government force YOU to speak or create a message that’s contrary to your religious beliefs?

As an American citizen, you already know the answer. Free Americans should NOT be forced by the government to speak or create messages that violate their deepest convictions.

What’s more, the government absolutely cannot bankrupt a business just because the owner’s religious speech may be viewed as unpopular.

Yet, in Aaron and Melissa’s case, the state slapped them with a $135,000 penalty that forced them to close their family business. The state even issued a gag order, preventing them from talking about their beliefs, and ultimately, made them choose between their faith and their livelihood.

The fact remains: the Constitution prohibits government officials, high or petty, from forcing business owners to choose between earning a living or living out their faith. And the U.S. Supreme Court has long upheld and protected Americans’ right to do both.

Freedom of expression for ourselves requires freedom of expression for others. And freedom of speech has always included the right to speak – or not to speak – even if your speech is unpopular or goes against the government’s message.

Let your voice be heard! Speak out now in support of Aaron and Melissa Klein and urge the U.S. Supreme Court to hear this important case!

Petition in Support of Aaron and Melissa Klein

As someone who respects free speech, I’m shocked to learn that our very own government is now trying to force Christian business owners to speak and create messages that go against their religious beliefs.

As free Americans, we should NOT be forced by our very own government to create messages that go against our deeply held convictions, even if that message is viewed as unpopular.

True freedom of speech in America starts in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. And the U.S. Supreme Court has long protected our constitutional rights as citizens to speak freely – or not to speak at all.

Today, I stand with Aaron and Melissa Klein, and I believe that it’s perfectly reasonable for people of faith to operate business according to their religious beliefs.

I believe that:

  • People of faith should not have live in fear of the government simply by operating their business according to their religious beliefs.
  • The government should not be able to force a Christian business to close, simply because it disagrees with the beliefs and messages of its owners.
  • Faith business owners should NOT have to unjustly suffer life-altering penalties, such as the one issued to the Kleins for $135,000.
  • The government should not put out gag orders to silence people of faith, simply because they refuse to create a message that goes against their religious beliefs.

That’s why I stand First Liberty Institute and respectfully request the U.S. Supreme Court take their case to determine once and for all that speech is only truly free when it is not government mandated.
