First Liberty Internships

Whether you’re an aspiring lawyer or dynamic marketing communications professional, First Liberty’s internships offer real-world experience and the opportunity to impact the mission of protecting our First Amendment religious liberty rights. We are currently accepting applications for internship positions within our legal and marketing/communications groups, based in our Plano, Texas (Dallas area) office.

Qualified interns will have excelled at related college coursework and applied their skills through paid or unpaid positions and other leadership roles. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment. By the end of the internship, interns will have broad exposure to in various aspects of marketing and communications for advancing the cause of religious liberty with donors, attorneys, and the public.

We can also work with your university to arrange for college credit.

Internships | First Liberty Institute

Public Interest Legal Fellowship

First Liberty Institute’s Public Interest Legal Internship presents a small group of talented law students the opportunity to train to change the world through the practice of law. Interns spend their summer at First Liberty’s office in Plano, Texas where they will:

  • Assist with real cases on behalf of real clients,
  • Participating in seminars relating to legal theory,
  • Compete in an internal moot court competition that includes a final round before a panel of real judges, and
  • Benefit from other opportunities for networking with members of the bench and bar, sharpen specific legal skills, and much more enrichment.

Externships and Semester Internships

First Liberty considers applications for externships or non-summer internships on an individual basis. Externships and non-summer internships may be completed remotely or in person. To apply, send a resume, writing sample, a description of your availability (date range and hours per week), and a current transcript to legalinternships@firstliberty.org.

Additionally, externship application cover letters must include a brief description of the externship program, including:

  • the externship program’s requirements (including approximate hours per week);
  • contact information for the law school’s externship program director, if any;
  • a link to the law school’s externship program webpage, if any; and
  • any school-required forms.

Student Pro Bono Opportunities

First Liberty considers requests for law student pro bono projects on a case-by-case basis. Pro bono projects may be completed remotely or in person. To apply for a pro bono project, send a resume, writing sample, a description of your availability (date range and hours per week), and any hours goal or school pro bono program requirements to legalinternships@firstliberty.org.

Marketing Internship Program

First Liberty is looking for qualified interns to join our marketing team for assignments during the summers and breaks, as well as the potential for ongoing assignments, in these areas of specialization.

  • Writing for a variety of online and offline channels
  • Creative Services, including graphic design, video/multimedia, and web
  • Social Media across a broad variety of platforms
  • Marketing Communications, including marketing planning, project management, research, and special project assignments
  • Public Relations, including media relations, journalistic writing, and special projects

Internships | First Liberty Institute

Communications Internship Program

First Liberty Institute’s Communications Department seeks a dynamic, self-starter to assist media relations and communications efforts. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of public relations while working in a hands-on environment. The Communications Intern will work independently, as well as on a team to fulfill organizational goals and tasks. A few of the tasks they will help with include:

  • Assist in Scheduling and Coordinating Attorney Media Interviews
  • Create searches for tracking cases and FLI digital mentions
  • Communicate with reporters and learn how to navigate media relations on a variety of levels
  • Track and Document Print, Radio, and TV Interviews + Op-eds & Press Releases in Media Tracking (SharePoint)
  • Attend Legal Meetings and Headlines Meetings

Washington, D.C. Internship

First Liberty is looking for a qualified intern to join its Washington, DC office team for Summer 2026.

Job duties include:

  • Federal legislation and litigation tracking with respect to issues related to the First Amendment and religious liberty
  • Attending and reporting on external events and conferences in Washington, DC
  • Monitoring judicial nomination developments and hearings
  • Tracking state supreme court and state attorneys general elections
  • Programmatic support for Hill briefings, legal updates, and alumni receptions, including marketing, attendance tracking and on-site logistical support
  • Editorial and proofreading support for publications and research projects
  • Administrative and data support for external affairs projects

Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy Programs
