Navy SEALs Threatened With Court-Martial | First Liberty

America’s Elite Warriors Secure Major Victory

First Liberty represented 35 U.S. Navy SEALs whose careers and livelihoods are were threatened because of their religious beliefs. Why? Because they chose not to get a vaccine due to their convictions of faith. And it’s not only the Navy SEALs themselves who face harassment, but also thousands of Navy service members.

First Liberty helped lead the repeal of the vaccine mandate. After securing a victory district court that stopped the Navy from punishing our Nation’s finest warriors and thousands of sailors, we won a full and complete victory that rights the wrongs done to these brave heroes.

Harassing Navy SEALs is Vindictive and Punitive

Navy SEALs are brave and fierce fighters who dedicate years of their lives, sacrificing themselves physically and mentally to serve our nation and defend our liberties. Collectively, our clients have more than 350 years of military service and more than 100 combat deployments.

Plus, it costs millions of taxpayer dollars in training—approximately $2 million per Navy SEAL—to prepare the most elite fighting force on the face of the earth.

When the vaccine mandate was repealed, commanders held all power over deployments and vaccination status. This meant that many of our brave warriors faced second-class status, lacked deployments and could have been passed on for advancement if they had a commander who didn’t respect their religious beliefs.

And so First Liberty stepped in to defend these brave heroes.

Alaska Quote Marks

“Americans do not give up their religious freedom when they join the military. The Pentagon should be more concerned with 100% Constitution compliance, not 100% vaccine compliance.”

A Huge Victory for the SEALs and Thousands of Service Members

After nearly three years of litigation, our Navy SEALs case finally resolved when the court approved the settlement we reached with the U.S. Department of the Navy.

In addition to the precedent we set to protect all within the military, here’s how Navy service members will benefit:

  • The settlement ensures that Navy service members who refused the COVID vaccine for religious reasons will now have an opportunity to have their records corrected and their careers protected.
  • Servicemembers who elected to leave service after being mistreated by the Navy will get their records corrected.
  • The Navy will post a statement affirming its respect for religious service members, provide more training for commanders who review religious accommodation requests and pay $1.5 million in attorneys’ fees.
