The Supreme Court Can Stop Social Media Censorship
Associate Counsel Erin Smith wrote an op-ed for Newsweek discussing a consequential First Amendment case pending at the U.S. Supreme Court. The case deals with social media transparency laws in Texas and Florida:
“It is extremely important for the Court to get this right. Social media operates as the modern public square. Social media platforms hold themselves out to be a public service, neutral in their administration of their policies. But this simply isn’t the case. Social media companies routinely engage in censorship of individuals and organizations that possess ideologies they do not like…History teaches us that tyrants can come from anywhere on the political spectrum. Today, these companies have set out to censor religious and conservative speech. Tomorrow, it could be yours.”
