Kelly Shackelford recently spoke about the future of religious freedom in America at Awaken Church in San Diego, a church with 10 campuses across California, Idaho and Utah.
In this compelling message, First Liberty’s President and CEO shares about the ongoing battle for religious freedom, the victories we’ve secured in recent years, as well as the impact people of faith can have on our nation when we stand strong and speak truth.

Churches are under attack. In 2022, First Liberty represented Awaken Church. We secured a huge victory so they could have one of their most important services of the year. For their Christmas program, the church requested to rent the Rady Shell, a concert venue owned by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association. The association at first accepted, but then refused, saying it did not have a policy in place for renting to religious organizations.
We sent a demand letter, explaining that these actions were illegal. To their credit, venue officials did the right thing and welcomed the church program. The “Night of Christmas” celebration was a resounding success! There were more than 15,000 people in attendance, with many of them coming to faith.
