Recently, U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY), delivered a speech on the Senate Floor suggesting that politicians are in fact choosing from the First Amendment what to enforce. Further, he elaborates on the blunt fact that certain politicians are outwardly discriminating based on religious beliefs.
He continues down the road of discussing the insulting abuses of power with this powerful statement:
“Politicians do not get to play red-light, green-light within the First Amendment.”
Political figures like Senator McConnell are blazing their own trails regarding the importance of protection of our First Freedom. Once the First Freedom falls, we will soon experience the domino effect. Senator McConnell discusses this and how recent demonstrations involving social injustices have brought to light the evident double standard about what is important to certain politicians.
However, Senator McConnell is not the only politician on Capitol Hill who is taking a stand for the restoration of our guaranteed First Freedom.
U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo) wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr that calls for an investigation of the unjust violations of our First Amendment. He writes this pertaining to how our trusted state officials are hypocritically allowing thousands of people to protest, meanwhile keeping strict caps on religious gatherings.
The senator states candidly that “state officials across the country have blatantly violated the free exercise and free speech rights of religious Americans.”
Imagine if some state officials had their way. Imagine if we lived in a country where religious liberty comes to a red light. We would soon encounter turmoil in every road we go down.
The truth is that America is at a crucial crossroads.
The First Amendment and its guaranteed rights for all people of faith–including free speech, freedom of assembly and the free exercise of faith–are the very foundation to all our other freedoms. If our first freedoms fall, all others will soon be toppled, too.
Is this really the path we want our country heading down? Is this a sacrifice we are willing to make?
