Stakes are High for Outcome of Bakery Case at the U.S. Supreme Court

Kelly Shackelford, President & CEO of First Liberty Institute, attended oral arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court in the religious liberty case of Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd v Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

Watch Kelly Shackelford’s analysis of the Masterpiece Cakeshop case,
argued at the Supreme Court on December 5, 2017.

First Liberty filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to rule in favor of Colorado baker Jack Phillips in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. The brief was filed on behalf of our clients, Aaron and Melissa Klein. As former owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the Court’s ruling in this case could have a significant impact on their case, which is currently before the Oregon Court of Appeals.

In a case similar to that of Masterpiece, the Kleins were penalized $135,000 by the state of Oregon for politely declining—on the grounds of their faith—to create a custom cake to celebrate a same-sex wedding.

Watch for updates on the Klein case and make sure you’re getting First Liberty’s e-mail alerts.
