On January 30, First Liberty will be at the Oregon Court of Appeals arguing our Sweet Cakes by Melissa case.

As we prepare for this important court date, please pray for Aaron, Melissa and their family. This has been a long, drawn-out battle for them and their five children. They’ve been searching for sweet justice for more than a decade.

This upcoming argument is a huge opportunity. A favorable decision from the Oregon Court of Appeals could mean the Kleins finally get to enjoy a victory that brings an end to the state’s hostility.

Click here to watch the argument. It’s set to begin at 12 pm EST | 11 am CST.

Please also pray for:

  • Volunteer attorney James Conde of the law firm Boyden Gray PLLC. He’ll be the one arguing the case.
  • First Liberty’s legal team and everyone in our organization devoting extra time to prepare for the argument.
  • The judges who will hear this case. Please pray for their wisdom and discernment, so they will have open minds as they listen to our arguments.

With this argument only a few days away, here’s why we’re optimistic.

The Kleins have been to the U.S. Supreme Court twice. And each time, the nation’s highest court handed them an outcome that was step in the right direction. On both the first and second trip to the Supreme Court, the Justices vacated the lower courts’ rulings and sent the Kleins’ case back down for a “do over.” The Supreme Court instructed lower courts to re-examine the case in light of key precedents protecting religious liberty and freedom of speech.

Those cases were Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado and 303 Creative v. Elenis. The U.S. Supreme Court made it abundantly clear that government hostility toward religious Americans is unconstitutional and it is unconstitutional for any state to force people to create messages that violate their convictions.

That means there are now two major Supreme Court rulings that favor our clients.

With these Supreme Court decisions in hand, we’re in a strong position going into next week’s argument.

As always, we want to thank you for being a faithful supporter. Your prayers and encouragement have given Aaron, Melissa and First Liberty strength in this arduous legal process.

We’re especially grateful for how generous you’ve been all these years. Thank you for every gift and donation you’ve made. It’s how we’ve been able to provide Aaron and Melissa with top class legal representation at no charge. Your gifts are the reason why we can fight these battles. Because as you know, taking on the government in court requires tremendous resources.

Please keep praying. There’s a lot at stake with the Sweet Cakes case. A win for the Kleins could be a win for religious freedom more broadly. The outcome could impact countless Americans in the marketplace who face hostile treatment and the real threat of losing their business or their livelihood because of their beliefs.
