This week, First Liberty delivered an important win for two Christian students who love to express their faith in God through worship songs.

West Ward Elementary School in Allegan, Michigan initially said it wouldn’t allow the students to sing songs by Christian artists Brandon Lake and Colton Dixon.

We’re happy to report that the school has reversed course and will allow the two students to sing their chosen songs.

On Wednesday, we sent a letter to the school. Our attorneys explained that students have a constitutional right to express their religious beliefs. Forcing our clients, or any student of any faith, “to change their song choice or lyrics would be unconstitutional censorship and viewpoint discrimination,” our letter stated.

In less than 24 hours, the school responded favorably, stating “that school staff were unfamiliar with the legal guidelines concerning religious expression in a public-school setting.” School administrators confirmed that they will allow the two students to participate on an equal basis with their classmates.

“We are grateful for the school’s prompt attention to our letter and their recognition that the law is very clearly on the side of the students,” said Kayla Toney, Counsel for First Liberty. “Our clients look forward to singing their faith-based songs, as practiced and planned, at the talent show on May 23.”

One of the students will sing Lake’s “That’s Who I Praise.” The song encourages listeners to trust in God’s promises and His ability to do the impossible, encouraging them to hold on to their faith no matter what challenges arise. Lake recently appeared on the American Idol’s Songs of Faith special.

The second student will be performing Dixon’s “Up and Up.” The song reminds people that God’s love is here to lift us up again, especially in times of hardship, struggle and grief.

Thank you for supporting First Liberty. You’re the driving force that helps deliver these crucial victories. Wins like these are incredibly significant to those involved. They make a big difference in the lives of Americans who want to exercise their constitutional rights and live in liberty.

It’s through these victories that we see some of the most meaningful impact, because collectively, these wins all add up to help protect religious liberty for millions of Americans.
