Big announcement! The U.S. Supreme Court will hear our case involving a Mississippi evangelist on Wednesday, December 3rd.
Gabriel Olivier’s case will impact the civil rights of ALL Americans, religious or not.
A local ordinance banned Gabe from sharing his faith in a public park. He filed a lawsuit claiming his constitutional rights were violated. But the case was dismissed under a broken legal precedent. It stopped Gabe from having the opportunity to have his day in court. That’s the main legal issue the Supreme Court will consider.
The stakes are incredibly high. This case involves several of our most important civil and constitutional rights as Americans.
It affects religious liberty and the right of every person to talk about their religious beliefs with other people in public, whether it’s in a park, on a sidewalk or at an event. America was established to ensure everyone could freely practice and express their faith without being punished.
Free speech protections under the First Amendment are also at stake. Free expression—without the threat of being punished or censored by the government—is a foundation of our country. That’s a big part of this case because the city where Gabe lives put an ordinance in place to silence speech it didn’t like.
And finally, this case is also about due process. If your civil liberties are violated—including your religious freedom—you have a right to go to court and plead your case. It’s one of our most basic rights. If city or state puts in place unconstitutional laws that target religion, as was the case in Brandon, Mississippi, Americans should be able to challenge those in court.
Gabe’s case could correct more than 30 years of bad precedent. A new precedent could bolster the rights and religious freedom of millions—ensuring every American has strong legal protections when sharing their faith and beliefs in the public square.
Please Continue to Pray: This Case is a Historic Opportunity
Each year, the Court is asked to hear thousands of cases, but the justices only accept a small fraction. Getting to argue at the Supreme Court is a rare opportunity—something very few law firms and attorneys get to do. And winning this case could bring huge change.
The court date is only six weeks away, meaning Gabe and our legal team need your continued support. Please pray for:
With so much riding on this Supreme Court decision, the next several weeks will be incredibly busy. We’re spending long hours preparing for our opening arguments and for the challenging questions each justice will ask.
Will you support First Liberty with a timely donation? Arguing at the highest level demands a great deal of resources. Your gift today will make a tremendous difference in this final phase.
