Shackelford Statement on First Meeting of President’s Religious Liberty Commission
First Liberty President and CEO Kelly Shackelford serving as member of Commission.
Washington, D.C.—The President’s Religious Liberty Commission met for the first time today, focusing on the foundations of religious liberty from our nation’s founding to the present day, including the founders’ intent behind the First Amendment’s religious liberty protections, and a discussion of related key U.S. Supreme Court decisions. The meeting was held at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.
Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel to First Liberty, and a member of the Commission, said of today’s meeting, “Our republic is built on the foundation of religious liberty. Today’s experts confirmed through their testimony that our First Freedom is the foundation for all of our other rights. It is paramount that judges and elected officials follow the intent of our Founders and the history and tradition of religious liberty in our nation. After today’s meeting, I am even more excited about what the Commission is doing and the impact we will make on religious freedom.”
In addition, Mark David Hall, Ph.D., Professor at Regent University’s Robertson School of Government, author, and Senior Research Fellow at First Liberty Institute’s Center for Religion, Culture, & Democracy testified before the Commission.
