First Liberty Institute’s Kelly Shackelford Statement on Today’s U.S. Supreme Court Oral Arguments in Carson v. Makin
Washington, DC—Today, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral argument in Carson v. Makin, a case challenging a Maine law that bans families from the state’s student-aid program simply because they choose schools that provide religious instruction. The Institute for Justice and First Liberty Institute represent parents challenging the law. The following statement may be attributed to Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel to First Liberty Institute, who participated in today’s oral argument:
“Government discrimination against parents based on their religion is not only wrong, it’s unconstitutional. We are hopeful the Supreme Court will put an end to this illegal discrimination, not only for the sake of the Nelsons but also for the sake of every parent across America.”
