OPINION: Requiring schools to display ‘In God We Trust’ sends right message

Patriotic displays of the Florida state motto — “In God We Trust” — may soon find their way to Florida’s public schools, thanks to a new bill recently passed by the Florida Legislature.

The proposal mandates all Florida school districts display of the state motto in “a conspicuous place” in its schools. If signed into law it, would take effect July 1.

When our Nation’s Founding Fathers wrote the Establishment Clause into the Bill of Rights, they envisioned it as a protective device – a means of safeguarding citizens from a federally-mandated religion.
