The First Amendment is under attack again – and in conservative Texas.

Since 2012, the Kountze ISD school district has been fighting middle and high school cheerleaders over using a Bible verse on their run-through banners, even though the cheerleaders used their own money for their materials.

The Texas Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that the cheerleaders have a right to religious speech, finding that their banners constituted private religious expression and not government speech that could be censored by the school. Despite this ruling, the school district continues to file appeal after appeal to try to block the cheerleaders’ use of Bible verses on their run-through banners.

Hiram Sasser, general counsel for First Liberty Institute, joined today’s show to talk about this important religious freedom case.
