The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to finish its term by June 30. With only a few days left, First Liberty needs your continued support as we wait on a response on two major cases.
Right now, the justices are deliberating whether to hear our case involving Gabriel Olivier. We expect a response any day.
Gabe is an evangelical Christian who desires to share his faith with others. But the City of Brandon, Mississippi silenced his evangelism. A local ordinance forced Gabe to stand in a distant, empty “free-speech zone,” far from the people he wanted to reach. He challenged that ordinance in court, but the judge dismissed his case based on a quirk in the law – one that needs to be corrected. We asked the Supreme Court to hear the case and affirm that every American has a right to plead their case in court.
We’re also waiting on the Court’s response to our Cambridge Christian School case.
In 2015, two Christian schools faced off at the Citrus Bowl, now known as Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. At the opening of their championship game, students asked to pray over the loudspeaker.
But the Florida High School Athletic Association forbade them from praying, saying that praying on government property would be “endorsing” religion. We appealed to the Supreme Court.
These cases impact everyone in the country, religious or not.
Our Olivier case affects the civil rights of all Americans. If the Court agrees to hear this case, it would be an opportunity to strengthen protections for one of the most fundamental rights: the right to have your day in court.
Religious liberty is meaningless if Americans can’t seek relief when their rights are trampled. If you can’t challenge a violation of your rights, are you truly free to exercise your religion?
Our Cambridge Christian case also presents a huge opportunity to ensure students—and all Americans—can freely express their beliefs without government censorship.
If the lower court decision against our client stands, it would set a dangerous precedent that government can silence religious speech. That, of course, is a direct violation of the First Amendment, and it’s why First Liberty is fighting this case at the highest level.
Please pray for the justices’ wisdom and discernment as they decide whether to hear these cases.
