Religious Liberty Leader Supports Confirmation of Russ Vought to Direct the Office of Management and Budget
Washington, DC—Religious liberty attorney Kelly Shackelford today expressed strong support for the confirmation Russ Vought as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (“OMB”).
“Russ Vought is exceptionally qualified and should immediately be confirmed as Director of OMB,” said Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel for First Liberty Institute. “It is shameful that some Senators resorted last time to an unconstitutional religious litmus test in their effort to derail Russ’s nomination. Article 6 of the Constitution makes clear that a nominee’s religious beliefs can never be a reason to disqualify them from public office. Russ nevertheless withstood that bigoted attack with competence and grace, precisely the qualities needed to perform such an important public service role.”
Vought has served as Deputy Director of OMB since 2017 and Acting Director since 2019. During his 2017 confirmation hearing, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) questioned Vought’s religious beliefs.
