U.S. Supreme Court Protects Places of Worship from NY Governor Cuomo’s Order
First Liberty Institute filed friend-of-the-court brief in key religious liberty cases at the Supreme Court of the United States
Washington, DC—Last night, the Supreme Court of the United States granted an emergency injunction against restrictions on houses of worship ordered by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in in and Agudath Israel of America v. Cuomo. The following statement may be attributed to Kelly Shackelford, President, CEO, and Chief Counsel to First Liberty Institute:
The Supreme Court has recognized rightly that our constitutionally protected rights are not suspended during a pandemic. Religious freedom is our First Freedom and one of our most fundamental rights as Americans. Treating it like a second class right was offensive, foolish and unconstitutional. Government officials may not abuse their emergency powers to discriminate against Americans of faith.
First Liberty Institute filed briefs in support of the Brooklyn Diocese and Agudath Israel.
